The Pre-Submission Checklist: 15 Things to Check Before You Hit Submit

· 4 min read

Small mistakes in the last hour can cost marks you've worked hard for. Run through this list before every submission.

Content

  1. Have you answered the exact question in the brief?
  2. Have you covered every point in the marking rubric?
  3. Does the introduction state your argument, and does the conclusion answer the question?
  4. Is every paragraph relevant to the question?

Evidence and referencing

  1. Is every claim supported by evidence where needed?
  2. Does every in-text citation appear in the reference list, and vice versa?
  3. Is your referencing style consistent and the version your course requires?
  4. Are direct quotes in quotation marks with page numbers?

Language and presentation

  1. Have you proofread it, ideally out loud or after a break?
  2. Is the word count within the allowed range, and have you checked what counts (references, appendices)?
  3. Do headings, fonts, spacing and margins follow the guidelines?
  4. Are tables and figures numbered, captioned and referred to in the text?

Submission

  1. Is the file in the required format (often .docx or .pdf) and named as instructed?
  2. Have you uploaded the correct version, not an older draft?
  3. Have you saved a copy of the submission receipt?

Academic integrity

Make sure the work you submit follows your institution's rules. Cite everything you've drawn on, and if you used any tools or support that must be declared, declare it.
